DineWise Makes Following A Low Sodium Diet Easy!

The Salt Issue
After sugar, salt is America’s leading food additive, both in manufactured foods and home cooking. The average American consumes between 2 and 4 teaspoons of salt a day, which quickly adds up to 15 pounds of salt a year! According to the USDA, healthy American adults should have no more than 2,400 mg (or about 1 tsp) of sodium a day in their entire diet.

Salt and Hypertension
Studies have shown that sodium can play a role in hypertension or “high blood pressure” development in many individuals. Some factors that may influence salt-sensitive hypertension are obesity, advanced age, diabetes and kidney dysfunction. Hypertension is associated with a higher risk for heart disease and stroke.

The relationship between salt consumption and blood pressure is stronger in older people, in those with a family history of hypertension and in those who have a genetic predisposition to higher blood pressure. Studies have shown that when following a low sodium or low salt diet, salt-sensitive people can experience a decrease in blood pressure. However, even if you’re not sensitive to salt, excessive salt intake has been linked with stomach cancer, ulcers, osteoporosis and kidney problems. So while some individuals are more sensitive to the effects of a high sodium diet, everyone can benefit from reducing the amount of salt that they eat.

The Salt Solution
Although the USDA currently sets the recommended daily limit for sodium for healthy individuals at 2400 mg per day, those who are sensitive to salt may be advised by their doctor to reduce their intake even further. A daily limit of 1,500 mg of sodium is generally considered a healthy low sodium diet plan.
