Ask a hundred people that question, and you'll get a hundred different answers. Try it for yourself and see. Even if our brain's knowledge is wrong, it believes it to be right anyway. Our brain remembers something we saw, something on TV, read online, or heard from a friend. Then we live our lives accordingly, until we learn something else that changes our mind.
Your body is more like the pencil in that it operates very simply along the lines of how many calories and nutrients it needs to function. Functionality is a concept we don't normally associate with dining and healthy lifestyles. Your body does communicate with you as to the exact status of your health and the maintenance of your healthy lifestyle, but in the end, our brains make all the final decisions. If you can change your mind, you can change your health and the rate your body is aging.
I can go on and on about how your body communicates with you, but let's just focus on one key area: your weight. Your brain has a different opinion of your weight than your body does. When I was first diagnosed with Diabetes, I was 6 feet tall and weighed 260 lbs.
I am happy to report, I'm still 6 feet tall, but I weigh 190 lbs. I stick to a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet and work out for an hour before I go to work and an hour in the evening. I tend to hate exercising, but in my case it's proven to be the only way I can keep my blood sugar levels stable.
That's my brain's opinion of my health. If I go to the
DineWise
BMI (Body Mass Index) Calculator, my body tells me a different reality. My current BMI is 25.8, classifying me as overweight. I think we can all agree that being overweight cannot be considered healthy.
The good news is that when I first changed my mind to change my body, my BMI was 35.3 and I was classified as obese. Today, I am only .8 away from having a normal BMI. Our BMI index has been a handy and motivational web page for me to bookmark and measure my long-term progress.
What is your BMI?
Now I'd like everyone to go to the
BMI Calculator page and see what your body has to tell your brain. Don't worry, I'll wait a few minutes before I type some more.
Welcome back! Were you surprised with the results you found? Not only do you know what classification of weight status you have today, you also have a number that tells you how far you have to go to improve to the next bracket. See, your body (actual) is smarter than your brain (what you think it is).
