DineWise for Senior Lifestyles

DineWise is your Easy Solution for Healthy Senior Meals, Conveniently Delivered Nationwide!

Whether you're a senior taking care of yourself or a caretaker caring for a parent that lives far away, the DineWise Advisory Board of Food Experts has created delicious chef prepared Senior Meal Plans designed for today's healthy senior lifestyle. DineWise Senior Meals are ideal for single seniors or couples who want to maintain their independence. Family Caregivers can use Senior Meals to help make taking care of elderly parents more convenient.

Senior Lifestyle Changes

Seniors who find themselves newly single may not know how to cook or may not be motivated to cook for one. Physical limitations related to age may also make the practical preparation of meals challenging. DineWise chef prepared senior meals are easy to prepare because they are ready to heat (and then eat!) in a microwave or oven. Seniors on a budget may worry that they can't afford the groceries necessary to cook balanced, healthy meals; however, DineWise offers delicious pre-portioned breakfasts, lunches, and dinners that are well within even the most modest budget.

And, for seniors who aren't as mobile as they once were, DineWise Meals are delivered right to your doorstep! So that means a healthy meal can be as close as your freezer door.

Less Exercise and Slower Metabolisms

Aging changes the body's physiology and many seniors experience a gradual decrease in muscle mass which affects their metabolism. Moreover, while maintaining physical activity is beneficial to general health, many seniors are not able to be as active as they were in earlier decades. As a result, seniors who eat portions sized for their younger days find themselves gaining weight. DineWise Senior Meals are specially portion and calorie controlled to be just right for seniors.

Aging Gracefully, Eating Well

Aging generally changes our relationship with food as well as what our bodies require from the foods we eat. In all life stages, food selection is driven by lifestyles needs. Young families tend to be more active and put more energy into food shopping and preparation. Meal-time is an entirely different occasion when there are growing bodies to feed. When the nest is empty, many older adults enjoy the freedom in being able to cook for one or two. But as time passes, some seniors may find it more and more challenging to prepare balanced meals.

At any time -- but especially later in life -- eating the right foods can help people to stay mentally sharp, emotionally balanced and full of energy while keeping a positive attitude and maintaining a healthy immune system.

While DineWise meals for seniors are lower in calories than many take-out or convenience food solutions, it’s where those dietary calories come from that makes DineWise Senior Meals a great choice! Our Advisory Board of Food Experts has created meals and meal plans with the appropriate amount of calories from fat, protein and carbohydrates. Each meal is also within USDA guidelines for sodium.

Senior Taste and Appetites
Our sense of taste and smell diminish as we get older so seniors tend to season their meals more than they did when they were younger; however, seniors’ bodies can generally tolerate less salt than younger people. DineWise Senior Meals are created within the daily sodium guidelines outlined by the USDA. Our chefs use less salt and more herbs and spices for flavoring, resulting in a healthier (and tastier) experience.

For seniors with particular sodium concerns, our Low Sodium section offers the same delicious and nutritionally balanced meals as our Senior Meal Plans section but is specially created to suit a Low Sodium lifestyle.

Supplementing DineWise Meals for the Senior Lifestyle

Fiber For Life
Daily fiber is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive tract which in turn helps you to absorb more vitamins and minerals from your food. Although DineWise meals contain some fiber-rich foods, you can increase your fiber intake by adding fresh produce such as fresh fruit, salads, or sliced vegetables to any DineWise Meal. Raw fruits and veggies are loaded not only with fiber but also with vitamins, minerals and enzymes that aid digestion. Consuming fresh fruits and salads requires very little preparation. Likewise, DineWise has a full selection of lean proteins that can be added to any salad to create a complete meal. These great DineWise products can be found in our Salad Toppers section.

Bone up on Calcium
Calcium and vitamin D are important nutrients for the prevention of Osteoporosis, a disease that often affects aging adults and results in brittle bones. Needless to say, maintaining strong bones is essential for staying active and living independently. Some of the best sources of calcium are low-fat dairy products such as cottage cheese, yogurt and milk, which are easy to incorporate into the DineWise Senior meal plan. If you're lactose-intolerant, consider lactose-free and lower-lactose products such as lactose-treated milk, hard cheeses and yogurt. See our FAQ section for some additional calcium-rich food suggestions. If you’re concerned about meeting your calcium intake needs, talk to your physician about whether a calcium supplement is right for you.

Take in Water and Fluids
Although the sense of thirst often diminishes with age, keeping hydrated is important to feeling your best. It’s recommended to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of non-caffeinated beverages each day.

Staying properly hydrated can:
    • Aid in your digestive system’s overall health and efficiency
    • Maintain flexibility in your joints
    • Help to keep your mind clear

High water-content foods include melons, grapes, cucumbers, onions, apples and cabbage. Incorporating these foods into your diet can help to keep you hydrated. Soup is another great way to add fluids and DineWise has four Healthy Lifestyle Soups for you to choose from: Savory Vegetable Stew, Turkey Black Bean Chili, Chicken and Rice Soup, and Bison Chili with Beans.
